Posted: Sat Dec 20, 2014 6:34 pm Post subject: Removing / Modifying The Focal Plane Shutter? |
|
|
Hi; first post on the forum. I'm new to 4x5 - my previous experience is in medium format stereography.
Recently I acquired a military Speed Graphic with a stereo attachment in a trade. The focal place shutter looks like it's being held open by the dividing septum that prevents the two photos from overlapping.
If I look through the ground glass I can see parts of the focal plane shutter protruding into the image areas.
Since I'm not going to use the focal plane shutter (the camera is fitted with a front Packard shutter) and it seems to be getting in the way of obtaining an obstruction-free image, could I simply remove it?
Is it a big job? Might it be a better idea to obtain a Super or Crown body and affix the stereo attachment to one of those cameras instead?
Regards,
Steven

Keep the focal plane in. You may later change your mind. In the meantime the focal plane shutter will not interfere with using the lens shutter.
Stereo Graphics are rare and you would be better off not tearing a good one apart. There are people here who can repair or teach you to repair a focal plane shutter. |

45PSS - It's the KE-12 4x5. Serial number in the 893,xxx range. I'd post pictures but I don't see where to attach them. The pictures are on my mobile device and do not have image URLs.[/img]

Hi, Sirius: this is not one of the ancient Stereo Graphics. This is a military KE-12 that has been modified. It is impossible to use the focal plane shutter with this modification, but it is getting in the way of exposing film. |

That makes it a 1954 Pacemaker Speed Graphic. Being it is the Military version it may or may not have the body release or side rangefinder.
This manual will cover it: http://www.graflex.org/manuals/45-Pacemaker-Speed-and-Crown-Graphic.pdf _________________ The best camera ever made is the one that YOU enjoy using and produces the image quality that satifies YOU. |
