I am new to using my Speed Graphic. I want to use flash bulbs, but when I plug the cord into the shutter port on the flash unit, and into the shutter release on the camera, the bulb fires as soon as I put it into the flash unit. I can not get it to fire if I plug the cord into any other port on the flash unit. What am I doing wrong?

Try cocking the shutter first.

I thought I did, and that doesn't seem to make a difference, but I will try that again (i think again?) tonight when I get home and let you know if that helps or not.

Do Not waste another flash bulb.
Connect the Graflite according to this instruction manual

Use the built in synchronizer instructions. Be sure to set the circuit control to N.
