Why is the collapsing hood for a Graphic View
called a "compendium" hood? Am I missing
something terribly obvious? |

As a direct meaning for why "compendium" was used for this device--is one of those oft time used--a Photographic lingo("License")---dictionary term>>the substance of a larger work>to counterbalance>to make up for....
Calumet has them---however---not all comps have the type of attachment provision needed for the Graphic view!
Very common device used on most view cameras,
even some of the smaller format cameras!!

Bert, if you have to ask that question, you just don't understand!
I take it you were never a parent and had to answer an IMPOSSIBLE question from a child. BECAUSE is the ultimate defense of an adult to a child's onslaught of trival questioning. |

The Compendium bellows attachment is a rare accessory (almost as rare as a Rodenstock 270mm f/6.5 Tele-Optar in 1000 shutter and that's rare)! I was lucky enough to find one new in its box back in the mid 80's. Because of its rarity, I don't use it. If you really want one, I would suggest searching the web and Shutterbug magazine regularly as the bellows do appear from time to time. Good luck!

Bert,
I heard this with some frequency as a child, and my children heard "Because" also. It is essentially an abbreviation (at least in my case) with somewhat limited usage. I was told to do something, or asked if I might do something and received a negative reply. I then would ask "Why?" The answer was "Because". This was after I understood that the full answer was "Because I said so" or Because I said "No".
In my case it was not used for a "real" question, only in cases of questioning parental authority. My Grandchildren are about to hear it also, at least once I teach them what "No" means.

Exactly! I think my Dad used it with me because he didn't have a better answer and I sure couldn't dispute that one. |

i know that some people hate them...but emoticons do help fill in for the lack of non-verbal communication in on-line posts...
sometimes a little smiley face can make all the difference between sharing a joke and striking a nerve
good luck and peace

A working version could be made from a junker camera, you 'll just have to make the frames and the attaching parts.
the original was made from the same frabric but slightly smaller. For a photo of one go to fellow poster and Graphic View hoarder Rich S's website.
http://www.southbristolviews.com and look into his 'old equipment ' link.
