I have some 4x5 and 3.25x4.25 film holders that are in need of repair. the wood end pieces of the holder where you swing open the end and put in and take out the film has come off or is about to come off. it looks as though they were originally attached by a fabric and glue application. does anyone have a good repair technique? I was told gaffers tape would work.

Yep gaffer tape works well. Check Library and Archival supplies for fabric tape. Most Gaffer tapes made today are a little thicker than the original tape.
Now why is it you want to repair a 3x4 cut film holder??
