Hi all;
I bought my first package of 4x5 sheet film to cut down for my Graflex. But there's a problem: the box says, "Only open in total darkness". How do I know which way the film is packaged in the box? I suppose I could take one out (in darkness) and look at it, sacrificing it in the process. Can anyone guide me? The film is Arista.Edu Ultra 200.
Many thanks,
Larry |

The notches on the short side of the film should be on the top right when you slide the film into the holder. Doing this will make sure the emulsion side faces the dark slide. When cutting down film, trim the sides on the far side of the notches so the notches remain intact. Lots of info + videos on the web, just search "loading sheet film into film holder." |

Sheet film has a notch code in the short side off set from center. The pattern varies from film type and manufacturer.
With the notch code in the top right the emulsion is facing you. _________________ The best camera ever made is the one that YOU enjoy using and produces the image quality that satifies YOU. |

What size are you cutting the 4X5 down to ?
Freestyle sells smaller sheet film formats, and if they have the size you need
it would save you the trouble of cutting 4x5's down.
You may also want to make your cuts to preserve the notch code, it'll make
it easier to know which side the emulsion is for loading holders.
Otherwise remember to nip a corner off on the upper right, where the original
notch code normally is, so you'll know which way the emulsion is facing. |
