A bag mag is sort of a crue Grafmatic and essentually you are shuffling cards inside a box.
Each sheet of film is put into a septum that has a number on the back, when loaded properly and the numbers are in order, you can figure out how many exposures you have left or have shot.
Once a sheet is exposed you pull on the ring located on the lower right corner of the box, this pulls the exposed sheet into the bag where you grab it and work it towards the back of the stack and finally push it all the way in.
Simple, effective, but not exactly fast, though with practice it's faster than searching for film holders. |

Though somewhat crude, I think I like the bag mag better than the Grafmatics. They hold twice as much film and if you can find one for glass plates, it will hold 16 sheet film septums. I just made a new bag for my 3X4 holder. Not sure I want to try that again.

There is a reproduction of the official Graflex bag mag manual, complete with illustrations, on the Photo.Net large format forum, posted by Charles Monday on 29 Oct. 2006. I would post a link, but I haven't yet learned how! It's not hard to find though, and it will also show up very quickly on Google by searching for "cut film magazine." |
