I don't want to start a Ford vs Chevy debate here, but I'm looking for some ideas on films to use.
I've been using Fuji Astia 100F and I'm very pleased with the colors, but i haven't had time or money to try any other films. Obviously there is a film for every occasion, but if you were to pick one film to travel with which would it be?
I'm headed to Paris next week and will be traveling with my Crown. What film would you suggest carrying along?
Thanks |

I'd suggest Agfa APX but they don't make it in sheet form anymore and you can't have any of mine-))
Do you want colour? B&W? Print film? Readyload? |

Use the film your comfortable with, know inside and out and you won't get any weird surpises. There are too many variables as it is on a road trip. Changing film just before you leave won't help your trip at all.
I once assisted a photographer on a road trip. She had just recieved a lens from UPS that had gone out for a shutter change. She marveled at its size and we packed it in the camera case along with the others.
12 hours from the office we set up at the client's building for a sunset shot and we're about 10 minutes behind the curve. While she's setting up the camera with the new lens ( a 90mm Super Angulon f5.6) I'm prepping the yard.
She goes to stop the lens down and suddenly turns into this stuttering, quaking blob of bottle-blond hair...
There's no aperture scale!
Talk about the world crashing down on her. Here she is, her first assignment with this major client and she doesn't know what do to. Any of the other lenses we had were way to long. She had counted on this lens for most of the work, and the sun is setting and she doesn't see how we can get the shot and and and.
But since we consisitantly shot Kodak 64t and VPL I new their reciprocity characteristics well. I put the pointer half way down, metered for f16 and had her knock off several shots so it looked like she knew what she was doing. The chromes came out a bit over with one good one, the neg was fine. We didn't use the lens for the rest of the shoot and she gave the repair people a royal reaming when she got back to the office.
Had we left with some unkown stuff the chances of getting a magazine cover would have been nil.

I've been very pleased with Fuji Provia for transparencies in 120 roll film if that's any help to your situation. For b/w it's Ilford XP2 Super chromogenic all the way! If it's sheet film you need, I can't help you there. |
