Some time ago I was asking for opinions of the J and C Classic 200 sheet film, suggestions for developing chems, etc. Did not get many replys, but enough to get started. I have finally got around to exposing and developing a batch and am very pleased. Exposed it at 200 and that seemed correct. Pre soaked 30 sec in tap water, Used HC 110 developer, solution B, 6 min. in Nikor sheet film tank, 68 deg., invert agitation for 5 sec. every 30 sec. Stopped with tap water rinse of tank 5 times, fixer: Kodak Professional, 6 minutes, same agitation as dev. washed in Kodak Photo-Flo 200 solution 30 sec (.5 tsp in 1 qt. water) 12 negatives were processed in 32 oz. of chems which I then tossed. Don't know what the total campacity would be. The negs look good, contrast looks right, details in highlights and shadows. Was especially pleased with how clean the negs were - not a speck anywhere. I am a novice at this so I am inclined to think this film can be recommended. Just thought my experience might be helpful to someone else. |

Thanks for the report. I have purchased some of this film in 3X4 and 5X7 andd hope to try it soon. I will probably use PMK Pyro for development.

My experience with this film last year was that it was low contrast and did not expand in development very well. I was disappointed. This year, however, John at JandC says Classic film has been changed a bit. I've tried the 400 speed and like it a lot. The 200 speed is supposed to be the same.

I've read on the net that the 400 speed J&c classic is much loved by the 8x10 and larger?? crowd. I haven't tried the 400, but have shoot a good bit of the 200 in both 2x3 and 4x5. I'll agree that expansion doesn't seem to do allot, but I still like this emulsion. I too have shoot it at both iso200 and 100 at first while getting a grip on it but think the 200 is closer.(haven't done the tests yet)The times that XYZ gave seem to mirror my experiences also more or less.HC 110 6-8 minutes 20c. I ussually extend the dev. time to get a little more contrast out of the older single coated lens I use.At least thats the theory. With the climate the way it is with sheets, I sure hope Efke and J&C stick around.

I've used both the 200 speed and 400 speed EDU film from Freestyle which is the same film as the J&C, and I like them. they're much more like the films I remember from the 70's than the name brand stuff is. And from Freestyle, the price can't be beat, they have 100 sheet boxes of the 200 speed for under $30, and the 400 speed is around $34.
